By existing State statutes in Maine and rules in New Hampshire, a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), or Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) may become an Expanded Functions Dental Auxiliary (EFDA). This is a significant course of study leading to higher responsibilities and usually salary.
The course at YCCC will include 160 hours of lecture and practicum. Many assignments will have to be done at your home office. You must have a sponsoring dentist who will be encouraged to participate in the pre-clinical instruction here at the college.
The course is given here in Wells for 10 weekends of Friday and Saturday instruction. The weekends are spread out over the year, beginning in September and lasting through May of the next year.
Once awarded an EFDA certificate at the end of the 160 hours of pre-clinical training, the student will have one year of clinical experience with the supervising dentist as their mentor.
After over 80 hours of externship back at the office, the student will have a YCCC instructor or contract dentist perform a clinical evaluation at their own office using patients from their office.
The student then is able to apply to the State of Maine for their licensure in Maine. New Hampshire may offer reciprocal licensure on a case-by-case basis. You MUST have your Certified Dental Assistant Certificate from DANB to get a license in Maine. There have been students who have taken the EFDA course and obtained their CDA certification during the course or during their externship.
Classes meet twice monthly on Fridays & Saturdays.
