Academic Computing Guidelines
Welcome to YCCC. You have at your fingertips access to many State of
the Art computing resources here at YCCC. The information you will find in this document
describes the various services that are available to you as a registered user. The process
and procedures described in this document should be used to fully take advantage of the
computing resources at YCCC.
Acceptable Use Policy
When using a YCCC computer, you agree to comply with the
"Acceptable Use Policy" that governs the proper, ethical, and considerate use of
YCCCs computer system. Please see the entire text of the policy in your handbook or
at www.yccc.edu/tss/aupolicy.htm.
How to login to the Academic computers at YCCC?
To access the academic computing resources at YCCC you must use the
correct USERNAME and PASSWORD for each computer lab. Once you have turned the computer on
(if it is not already) you will see a variety of screens during the startup process. This
is normal and usually will take a few minutes to complete. Once you see the screen
requesting you to press the CTRL+ALT+DELETE key simultaneously you will are almost
finished with the login process. After pressing those specific keys you will be prompted
for a username and password. Look at your schedule or on the panel outside the lab for a
room number. That will be your username and the password will be left blank. Students and
faculty will use the USERNAME and PASSWORD specific to the room number in which the
resources are located. For example, if you are in room B102 you would type B102 in the
USERNAME Field and the PASSWORD field will be left blank.
Student Faculty Temporary Storage Space
YCCC has provided a temporary storage space for files on the YCCC
network. This storage space is kown as the "TEMP Drive" The "Temp
Drive" (formerly known as the K Drive) is exactly what its name implies, temporary.
This temporary storage is for any instructor or student to use to store or share files.
Please be aware that data on this drive is not secure and any individual with access can
view and manipulate the contents of any files, including yours. Also, TSS cleans this
drive at the end of each semester. Any files on the drive at the time of cleaning will be
deleted and are no longer available to the user.
Email Procedures
Email is critical to your YCCC educational experience. You can set
up an email account through one of the free Internet-based email service providers. (YCCC
does not provide email accounts for students.) To set up an email account, select an email
provider from those available when you search for the keyword "email" using one
of the Internet search engines. We recommend you choose a reputable provider that is easy
to set-up and use, and will be "good for life."
Technical Support
If you need technical support for a computer hardware or software
issue, please describe the issue to Technology Support Services (TSS) via WebDesk. WebDesk
is the online Internet-based Helpdesk YCCC uses to report technical problems. Please note
that TSS only supports computer hardware and software owned by YCCC. Access WebDesk and
instructions on how to use WebDesk at /webdesk.
Communication in the event of major failures
In the event that there is a major technology failure at YCCC, such
as a loss of connection to the Internet, the TSS department will contact key persons who
will disseminate information to faculty and students about the problem and its resolution.
Turning the computers off
When leaving a computer workstation in one of the computer labs it
is important to leave the area and computer organized. After you have completed your work
and are ready to leave you must press the CTRL+ALT+DELTE keys simultaneously and select
Logoff. This will close any programs and files you had open and will bring the computer
back to the login screen for the next person. It is not necessary to turn the computers
off after each session.
Software Availability
The Open Lab in the YCCC Library provides access to all software
packages taught at the college. These computers also provide students with access to the
Temp Drive. If you are not sure how to properly use the computers see the front desk staff
in the Library.
PRINTING
Printers are available in all classrooms and in the Library for
student use. Every printer is configured to print jobs for the workstations in its room
only. A good tip to remember is that there are usually several people printing to the same
printer so your print job may not print immediately. Be patient, and if you are not sure
VIRUS PROTECTION
See our Virus protection section on the main TSS page.
TOP TIPS FOR GOOD COMPUTING
- Save often! Saving your data often and on more than one diskette will
improve your chances of having a copy of your work should a diskette become damaged or
data become corrupt.
- Always store diskettes in a protective case when not using.Do not
store diskettes in direct sunlight.
- Do not delete something unless you know you will never need it!
- If an application is not responding correctly, save your work and
restart the computer. Often this will clear things up and you can continue to work.
- Remember what you name your files!
- Always try another computer after you report a computer failure to
WebDesk, your instructor, or the Library Front Desk Staff. The failure may only be with
that particular computer.
- Always log-in to a computer using the exact username and password
required for that lab. When logging on to a computer, type the username carefully and
check your spelling.
- When printing your work, be patient. Sometimes there is more than one
job in the printer queue and it will print them in order.
- When in doubt, find someone who can help you. Your instructor or the
Library Front Desk Staff is available to assist you, if you are unsure.
