Assessment Testing

Once students are accepted, the next step in the enrollment process at YCCC is to attend your assigned Placement Assessment and Registration session.

There are two possible waivers from the placement assessment:

1) Students who show sufficiently high SAT verbal (550 or more) and math (525 or more) scores which are not more than two years old;

2) Students who have another college transcript with an English and a Math course (100 Level or higher) with a grade of C or better.

Our placement assessment is a computer assessment that is not timed.  Students answer questions in the areas of arithmetic, elementary algebra, reading comprehension, and sentence skills.  Participants are not allowed to use a calculator on the math sections of the assessment except where certain specific problems are determined acceptable for use of a calculator. I the case of these problems an onscreen calculator will be made available.

While no preparation is necessary to take the assessment, it should be taken seriously. The results of the assessment are used to determine which courses are most appropriate for you to take so that you will not be taking courses that are either too easy or too difficult for you. Placement test results may require you to take introductory developmental or refresher courses in math and writing and may result in an extended course of study.

We suggest that you review the assessment descriptions below, the study guides for each assessment area and to also take this practice test.
