Contacting Employers

There are two different ways to contact employers when you are conducting your job search:

  1. Careful and timely responses to openings

Follow up on all postings or personal connections that you find. That means sending your cover letter and resume right away to the employer whose job was listed in the Sunday paper or just listed on-line. It also means placing that call immediately when your neighbor tells you his brother is the Vice President of National Semiconductor and is expecting your call. Cover all the bases on the direct leads you find quickly.

  1. A practical approach

Once you have done your company research, you have probably found a few companies that you are interested in who are not posting openings at the moment. You should still contact them by phone or with your resume. Go after them! If you are truly interested in the work that they do and can see yourself contributing to their goals and corporate mission, then let them know. If you are persuasive enough, when the company does have an opening, you will probably get a call for an interview. Many jobs are never posted publicly but employers are still seeking candidates. If you have already made contact, sent your resume and made a good impression, you are more likely to get a phone call before an opening is even advertised.
