ABOUT THIS COURSE (from the MIC bulletin):
In this course we will study the physical, cognitive and psychological
factors in individual development from conception to death as
an interactive process with other individuals, families and societies.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The content objective of this course is to introduce you to
development of humans by exploring your personal development.
We will use the issue of nature vs. nurture as a theme as we explore
the things that have influenced your development.
The language component of this course aims to help you express
your knowledge and opinions about the course content in English.
English skills you will develop will be writing, reading, speaking
and listening.
This course approaches the teaching of the subject matter content
and language (English) in an integrated way. So, in this course,
both teachers will help you:
1) develop skills in reading English texts for content meaning
and argument;
2) promote listening and speaking skills for the expression
comprehension of ideas in English;
3) develop basic English writing skills, in the composition
of paragraphs, short summaries and longer essays.
MATERIALS:
B5 notebook for journal work and a textbook titled: Nice talking with you.

DETAILS FOR COURSE REQUIREMENTS: SSI-205, Spring
2001:
Watch and reports
You will be required to report to the class two times during
the semester. Watch for any interesting newspaper articles that
speak to personal development. We will begin each class, starting
on April 14th, with student's Watch and Reports assigned on that
day. Please bring handouts and prepare for a 3-5 minute presentation.
Attendance and Participation in Class
Attendance and punctuality are both important requirements
in this class. You are expected to come to every class on time.
If you miss a class, please contact your instructors and make-up
all work. If you are absent for more than 5 class meetings you
may be asked to withdraw from this course.
Writing Assignments
There will be a number of writing assignments on the topics
discussed in class. You will be encouraged to edit your writing.
Writing Journals
You will regularly write your thoughts and questions about
the things we study in this course in journals. We will read your
journals and write back to you with our comments.
Presentations
We will practice making presentations in this course. Presentation
formats could include short reports, panel discussions, poster
presentations, and video-taped presentations.
Projects
Projects and group work will be introduced throughout the course.
