YCCC STUDENT
SENATE
GIVES THE GIFT OF EDUCATION
When the Student Senate was
told that for only $25 per
month, a Cambodian child
with little or no hope of
going to school could, in
fact, be educated, they
decided to make it happen
for not one, but two. With
the assistance of Dr. Cindy
Lahar, Chair of Biological
and Social Sciences, the
students designated $600 to Yang
Yango and Tha Sony
. Yang,
an 11yr old in 2nd grade,
lost his father to HIV and
is pictured, left, with a
grateful smile after
receiving his sponsorship
stipend of $88,000 Riel
or $22 American dollars.
Tha, an 18yr old, who was
orphaned after her father
died and her mother
abandoned her, is in the 6th
grade. The children live in
a poor village that is one
hour outside of Phnom Penh.
The average age of
elementary school dropout is
1st and 2nd grade, as the
children need to work for
the family and are not able
to pay for clothes or the
fees for school.
"The student senate is
committed to the sponsorship
of these two students,
advised Noah Lemire, Student
Senate President. We will
match all money earned,
dollar for dollar, to make
it happen."
The Student Senate recently
hosted a Halloween Dance at
YCCC wherein all proceeds
are to be used for the
continued sponsorship of
this gratifying and
worthwhile cause. |
