ADJUNCT FACULTY APPOINTMENT LEVEL CRITERIA AND PAY SCHEDULE

   

Adjunct Faculty teaching for York County Community College are appointed to teach on a course by course contract basis, which terminates at the end of each scheduled semester or term.  There is no guarantee of being assigned to teach in any subsequent semester.  The appointment of adjunct faculty to the Adjunct Faculty Pay Schedule is based upon criteria provided in this document, and the number of teaching credits is cumulative for purposes of placement to a Step 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 within the appointment level.  Please note that YCCC follows criteria established by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), which grants accreditation to YCCC for the awarding of the Associate Degree.  The criteria calls for all full-time and adjunct faculty teaching humanities, social and behavioral sciences, English, natural sciences, or mathematics within programs leading to certificates, diplomas, or degrees to have completed at least 18 graduate semester hours in their teaching field and hold a master's degree (CTCI, 1993).  For faculty teaching in career fields the requirement is that they hold a degree or credential at least one level above the Associate Degree or appropriate professional industry certification.

   

Appointment Level Criteria:  The following criteria are used to determine the assignment of an adjunct faculty member to a specific appointment level:

Level I: a.  Five (5) years of related experience,
  or
  b.  Associate Degree plus three (3) years of experience,
  or
  c.  Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
   
Level II:

a. Five (5) years of related experience plus two (2) years related teaching experience,

  or
 

b.  Associate Degree or appropriate industry certification, plus three (3) years of experience plus one (1) year related teaching experience,

  or
 

c. Bachelor’s Degree plus one (1) year related teaching experience,

  or
 

d.  Master’s Degree in the teaching field plus one (1) year-related teaching experience.

   
Level III:

a.  Associate Degree, or appropriate industry certification, plus five (5) years of experience plus five (5) years related teaching experience, 

  or
  b.  Bachelor’s Degree plus three (3) years related teaching experience, plus 30 graduate/undergraduate credits (or equivalent),
  or
  c.  Master’s Degree in the teaching field plus three (3) years related teaching experience.
  or
  d.  Doctorate in the teaching field and related experience.
   

*Adjunct instructors who have attained a higher degree (e.g. M.A., Ph.D., etc) during their adjunct teaching service with YCCC may petition movement to a higher level through the VP/Academic Dean.

Credit Courses:  Adjunct faculty teaching in credit courses are paid at a pay rate established by a combination of (1) the appointment level determined by credentials and experience and (2) the total number of accumulated credits taught by that adjunct faculty member with York County Technical College. 

 

A period is equivalent to 15 contact hours of instruction during a semester.  A course may have three weekly periods assigned to it although it may be a 2.0 credit hour course.  For example, Computer Software Applications has 2 semester credit hours defined as 1 period of lecture class and two periods of laboratory class for a total of 3 periods.  The faculty would be compensated 3 times the base rate. An instructor at a Level II, Step 1 would be compensated at $1,125 for the Computer Software Applications I course (15 x 3 x $25.00 = $1,125.00).
