 HOLIDAYS

   
By contract, faculty members do not receive holiday benefits.
   

For staff, generally, the paid holidays are as follows; however, there are some differences in your respective bargaining unions.  Consult your union contract or see your supervisor for details

   
New Year’s Day                        January 1
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 3rd Monday in January
Washington’s Birthday 3rd Monday in February
Patriot’s Day  3rd Monday in April
Memorial Day Last Monday in May
Independence Day July 4
Labor Day 1st Monday in September
Columbus Day 2nd Monday in October
Veteran’s Day November 11
Thanksgiving Day 4th Thursday in November
Thanksgiving Friday 4th Friday in November
Christmas December 25
   

Any holiday falling on Saturday shall be observed on the proceeding Friday and any holiday falling on Sunday shall be observed on the following Monday.

   

In lieu of premium pay, eligible employees may, upon mutual agreement, take compensating time at the rate of one and one-half (1 1/2) hours of compensating time for each hour of holiday work.  Employees not eligible for premium pay shall be paid or, upon mutual agreement, be given compensating time off at an hour-for-hour basis.  Compensating time shall be used pursuant to the provisions of Article 27, Compensating Time, as stated in the MSEA union contract.  Cash payments shall be made only in the instance of departmental policy established in conformance with Chapter 11, Sec. 1, of the Civil Service Rules.

   

If an administrator is required to work on a legal holiday, he/she shall be entitled to equal time off for those hours worked.

   

To be eligible for holiday pay, an employee must be in pay status or on an approved paid leave of absence the last hour of his/her scheduled work day prior to the holiday and in pay status the first hour of his/her scheduled work day after the holiday.
