WELLS-Wayne “Colby” Williams, a second year student at YCCC, has been named to the Maine Community College System’s All Maine Academic Team for two year colleges. With a perfect 4.0 average, Williams, 33, receives a $500 scholarship as part of the award. In addition, Williams was one of only 50 students nationwide to be named Coca Cola All-State Community College Gold Scholars and will receive a $1,500 scholarship as a result.

Williams next plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in psychology at either the University of New England or the University of Southern Maine. His ultimate goal is to earn an advanced degree in counseling. “I was always interested in helping people,” said Williams. “I didn’t know in what venue.”

After high school, Williams trained to be a massage therapist and yoga instructor, and became an instructor and program director at Seacoast Career Schools. “I wanted to be a counselor, and knew I needed a degree,” he said. “YCCC was so close to my house and so affordable.”

Williams also manages a family, having met wife Libby Hatlan while training for massage therapy. They have two kids, daughter Satya (11) and son Noah (8). They live in Kennebunk.

Williams is on track to graduate in May. He said he has great feelings for the college. “There are a lot of good aspects,” he said. “The instructors are great; I learned a lot from them. I enjoyed the student organizations (Williams is president of the Student Senate and a member of Phi Theta Kappa). They offered a lot of additional opportunities to learn and not just in the classroom. The administration has been great. People’s doors are always open. They’re always willing to help.”
