How to Fail an Online Course
Top 10 Tips Derived From Those Who Have Accomplished It

  1. Fail to log in on a regular basis -- To be successful in a course you should log into the course every day.

  2. Fail to check sections of the site -- When you log in you should always check, at a minimum, the calendar.

  3. Fail to check the Course Content and Assignment sections -- Missing an assignment is unacceptable.

  4. Don't read the chapters or lecture notes -- In an online course you are responsible for receiving the information that is normally conveyed in a class lecture.

  5. Ignore the submission deadlines -- The origin of the word deadline goes back to civil war times. When prisoners were captured, they were placed in an area with a line drawn around it in the dirt. These lines were the barriers they were not to cross. If they stepped across the line, they were shot. It became known as the deadline - you step across it and you are dead. In this case, if you step across the deadline your grade is dead. The computer program has this wonderful feature that disallows submissions once the deadline time has arrived. Your instructor has the right to not accept late work. Consult your course syllabus for how your instructor handles late work.

  6. Forget to take your quizzes -- Quizzes can be a large portion of your overall course grade.

  7. Don't submit your writing assignments OR submit them without proofreading -- Online courses are writing intensive. You are responsible for turning in every writing assignment. These assignments are not only graded for content, but also for grammar and punctuation. Every aspect of work you submit "communicates" something about you, either negatively or positively.

  8. Allow your team members to do all the work on a project, and then expect to get your full share of the credit -- This is not going to happen. You must be a team player, doing your share of the work.

  9. Think that the final grade will be better than the grade average as you go along -- The grade you make is the grade you will receive. Instructors do not give grades. Instructors assess the progress you make and assign the grades you earn. If it is important that you have a particular grade in a course, you better do the work required to earn that grade!

  10. Cheat -- YCCC will not tolerate any cheating. This includes plagiarism! See the college policy on cheating for more details.
