Wells-The dedication and ribbon cutting of the York County Community College (YCCC) Nursing Laboratory took place on Monday, April 28th at the 112 College Drive campus. The Nursing Program, which is in partnership with Southern Maine Community College (SMCC), was launched as a means to remedy Maine’s critical nursing shortage. Quality nursing programs across the country have long waiting lists, and YCCC/SMCC is experiencing the same.
The nursing lab was dedicated to Dr. Patricia Ryan, former president of YCCC, "whose dedication to the profession was unwavering and who truly was the champion of the program," advised John Rainone, Dean of Institutional Advancement. The introduction of an Associate Degree in Nursing is among many of her contributions.
Among those attending the ceremony included thirteen of Dr. Ryan’s family members including her two sons, Michael and Joseph, and their families. Peter Morin of Senator Snowe’s office, Carol Hurley of Congressman Allen’s office, Senator Richard Nass, and Representatives Joan Nass and Walter Wheeler were also on hand. Remarks were given by YCCC President, Charles Lyons; SMCC President, James Ortiz; John Rainone and Joseph Ryan. Nursing program faculty members, Carla Brit and Lisa Keenan, and Dept. Chair, Nancy Smith were in attendance to celebrate, as well as, answer questions about the partnership.
For four years, Dr. Ryan led the college through a time of change and growth with her unique blend of spirit, determination, intellect and humor. Her commitment to higher education spanned nearly 40 years as a nursing instructor, department chair, dean and ultimately college president. "Dr. Ryan guided YCCC through its transition from a technical college to a comprehensive community college, and was a prominent member of Maine’s higher education community," Rainone said. The dedication takes place two years after Dr. Ryan lost her battle with cancer. A plaque with Dr. Ryan’s image was unveiled and is displayed at the entrance to the laboratory.
