Speaker of the House to Deliver Commencement Address


Wells- York County Community College President Charles Lyons is pleased to announce that Speaker of the House, Glen Cummings, will deliver the commencement address on Saturday, May 17.

“Speaker Cummings is a passionate educator and has spent much of his career working with students in the classroom, or working on education policy as a state leader,” said Lyons. He is a professor of economics and entrepreneurship at Southern Maine Community College, founded the SMCC’s Entrepreneurial Center, and served as the Center’s first Director. Previously, he worked as a high school civics teacher and as the Director of Portland Partnerships, an educational non-profit group that builds relationships between public schools and local businesses.

In addition, Joseph R. Hanslip will attend YCCC's commencement and provide brief greetings on behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Maine Community College System. Trustee Hanslip is a resident of, and serves on the Town Council for, the Town of Sanford.

The commencement exercises will take place on Saturday, May 17 at 10:00 a.m. at the College Drive campus. Over 100 students are eligible to march as graduates of the Class of 2008.

York County Community College, established in 1994, is one of seven community colleges in the Maine Community College System. The college enrolls over 1,000 students in associate degrees and transfer programs and over 1,600 individuals in non-credit continuing education and professional development areas.
